Depressive disorders are among the most common psychiatric disorders in childhood and adolescence. They cause substantial psychosocial impairment and are a risk factor for affective disorders in adulthood. In both diagnosis and treatment age and developmental aspects need to be taken in account. We present a selective review of the current data regarding treatment of depressive disorders with a special focus on the particularities in the treatment of children and adolescents. First line treatments of childhood and adolescent depression are psychotherapy and antidepressant pharmacotherapy with selective serotonin inhibitors. For psychotherapy best evidence regarding effectiveness exists for cognitive behavioural therapy. The best evidence for antidepressant medication exists for fluoxetine which is the only drug approved for the treatment of depression in Germany. As a significance portion of patients does not remit under treatment with current approaches there is a pressing need for developing new and improved treatment methods.
