The omnipresence of the internet is a phenomenon of our time. Albeit the internet offers several possibilities and enriches and lightens our everyday life, some people develop problems with specific types of internet use and suffer from the consequences of extensive internet activities. In case the person develops a disease of clinical significance it is referred to as internet-related disorder or internet use disorder. This article gives an overview on the influence of the internet and its use on human well-being, i.e. which types of internet usage might lead to mental illness. It is also discussed whether an excessive use of the internet can be considered an addiction and related research is presented. Finally, specific challenges in the treatment of patients with internet use disorder are mentioned.
