Summary

Motherhood and the relationship between mother and child characterize the clinical symptoms of postpartum psychiatric disorders. Deficits in the relationship between a mother and her child can have lasting adverse effects on the affective and cognitive development of the child. These deficits rarely directly improve by the successful psychiatric treatment of the maternal disorder. Therefore, in addition to the standard psychiatric / psychotherapeutic treatment, therapy should focus on the mother's role as well as on establishing and supporting the mother-child relationship. Fathers play a crucial role in the maternal recovery process and provide important compensatory experiences to the children. Fathers can also suffer from emotional burdens and psychiatric disorders, especially when the mother is ill. The accessibility to treatment for mentally ill parents in the postpartum period has significantly improved in recent years in Germany as well as the number of differentiated care concepts and offers.
