Summary

The recognition and diagnosis of depressive disorders pose special problems and require special professional expertise. Depression must be discriminated from other forms of bad mood. Diagnostic algorithms alone according to ICD-10 oder DSM5 do not allow to make a diagnosis as they are based on diagnostic criteria, especially the psychopathological depressed mood. Important discriminative features are the quality of the emotion, the context and modulation. Underdiagnosis and overdiagnosis can both have negative consequences. The psychopathologic assessment must get more attention in science and the training of therapists.
