In Summary, vitaminD is needed to support bone health at all ages, and we have evidence today that vitamin D supplementation at a dose between 700 to 1000 IU per day reduces the risk of falls and fractures among adults age 60 years and older. This makes vitaminD an important public health strategy in the support of bone health. Potential additional benefits of vitaminD including cardiovascular health, cancer prevention, and immunity are promising based on observational studies but need to be confirmed in large clinical trials. Thus, current recommendations of vitamin D are largely based on bone health. Notably, consistent across endpoints such as fracture prevention, fall prevention, and many non-skeletal endpoints, vitamin D deficiency should be avoided, and optimal benefits seem to be conferred by serum levels between 75 to 110 nmol/l.
