In 1983, Dieter Bergemann acquired the Schattauer Verlag from the founding family. Prior to this, his own company, Mayr Miesback Printing and Publishing, had already developed a long-standing relationship with Schattauer Publishers. Since then he has managed the publishing house as both the Publisher and the CEO. After taking over, he re-structured the company, developing further activities and business segments, and aligned the business so that it would have a higher future orientation. He ensured that the publishing house developed its publishing platforms so that they would be considered a secure place for the publishing of excellent and reliable scientific knowledge. The specialty area of veterinary medicine, which today in addition to numerous practice-orientated journals as well as internationally recognized textbooks and atlases, was especially cultivated by him.

The physician and psychotherapist, Dr. Dipl.-Psych. Wulf Bertram, joined Schattauer as the Scientific Director in 1988. During 1992, he was appointed as the Publishing Director with a focus on program design and quality assurance. After studying medicine and psychology in Hamburg, Bertram worked initially for ten years at home and abroad in the fields of clinical psychology and psychiatry, after which he worked for the publisher Urban and Schwarzenberg in Munich, Germany, for three years where he led the program area for student textbooks. He brought his technical orientation with him to Schattauer and he was able to expand upon the existing area of psychosomatic medicine, psychiatry and psychotherapy from an initial three titles to more than 250 titles today.

Jan Haaf completed his engineering degree in 1991 at the Hochschule der Medien (Stuttgart Media University) in Stuttgart. Upon completion of his studies, he then spent several years in product management and marketing for an internationally active company in the graphics industry. From 1995 he worked in varied positions of responsibility at a publishing house. Since 2008, he has been a member of the Schattauer Verlag Board.
