In hemiarthroplasty, it was previously only possible to track pathological changes such as acetabular cartilage wear via radiography or by assessment of the cartilage at the time of revision or post-mortem. It was only recently proposed that radiostereometric analysis,  which has been used in the past to track implant migration and wear, could also be used to indirectly measure femoral head penetration within the acetabular bone and thus also measure degenerative changes to the articular cartilage. To find out more about this topic, please see the paper by John R. Field and colleagues which was published in Opens external link in new windowVCOT 2/2016.
